Averaging

2 Steps

1. You first add your numbers together.

3+7+2 = 12

2. Then you divide your sum by the number of addends.

12 divided by 3(the number of addends)= 4

4 is your average.

1. What is the difference between a parallelogram and a trapezoid?
2. What is the difference between the trapezoid and the trapezium?
3. How are rectangles, squares, and the rhombus all parallelograms?

*Think about the number of parallel sides.

* Denominator stays the same.

You add your fractions together, they equal one whole. Then add your whole in with your other whole numbers.

You must add the fraction side first, then add your whole numbers.
When you add fractions with a common denominator, your denominator stays the same. All that we add is the numerator.

To compare fractions we are cross multiplying, not drawing pictures.

Here's another number line with fractions and some equivalent fractions on it.

Fractions on a Number Line

We're working on comparing fractions and beginning to simplify fractions. The kids are creating number lines like this one that was created in one of my classes.

Polygons

We've begun reviewing and introducing polygons to your child. They have been classifying triangles and polygons. We've played matching games and drawn different triangles based on descriptions of sides and angles. We've also talked about how a figure is congruent or similar.

Alan November - Student's Learning

Alan commented that we are not creating lifelong learners; we are not helping students become problem solvers. I think to do this that I need to engage my students by helping them see real life applications to what they are learning in my class. I think I do this some by having them create their own story problems in class and then having others solve them. They take pride in their work and like create challenges for each other. Students can often learn better when they become the teacher and must develop a deeper understanding of a subject matter in order to teach someone else.

5th Grade Math

I have come to find out about how I can use blogs and podcasting to help my students become more excited about school and learning. I want to reach out to them using a medium that they are going to needto become proficient in, if they aren't already. I hope to challenge them and excite them about technology.
